FOLSOM, LA (WVUE) - A police chase that went on for more than 20 miles ended with a head-on collision that claimed the life of a 29-year old Madisonville man. State Police Troop L is investigating the fatal accident that killed 29-year-old Lawrence Edward Lemoine, Jr.
The two-vehicle crash happened around 2:30 am on Friday July 29, 2016 on LA 25 near the intersection of C. Gottie Rd. in Folsom. Troopers say Lemoine was pulled over a few minutes earlier by Hammond Police officers after he was observed driving the wrong way down a one-way street (Morris St, near S. Oak St.). According to officers, Lemoine initially complied with the traffic stop and pulled his 1998 Chevrolet Silverado and pulled into a parking lot. During the course of the stop, Lemoine reportedly decided to flee and a police chase ensued. The truck continued eastbound on US 190 into St. Tammany Parish, where the St Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office and Troopers from Louisiana State Police assisted the Hammond Police Department in the pursuit. Lemoine reportedly continued northbound on LA 25 from US 190.
Troopers say while Lemoine was fleeing northbound on LA 25, his vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and crashed head-on into a 2007 Sterling Dump Truck. Lemoine was reportedly not restrained at the time of the crash. He was severely injured and was pronounced deceased on-scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office.
The driver of the Dump Truck was wearing his seatbelt and sustained minor injuries in the crash. The driver of the dump truck voluntarily submitted to a breath sample, which showed no trace amounts of alcohol present. Impairment by Lemoine is unknown. Blood samples were obtained and will be submitted to the crime lab for chemical analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
