Contaminated shellfish concerns close fishing area

PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LA (WVUE) - The Louisiana Department of Health on Friday closed a molluscan shellfish growing area located in Plaquemines Parish along the Gulf of Mexico.

Growing area 11 was closed as a precaution due to concerns about paralytic shellfish poisoning, a serious illness caused by eating shellfish contaminated with harmful toxins.

State Health Officer Dr. Jimmy Guidry signed the closure order. Area 11 will be closed to the harvest of all molluscan shellfish until further notice. Tests will determine when the environmental conditions are within the requirements specified by the National Shellfish Sanitation Program.

LDH notified local oyster harvesters that work in the affected area. They also notified the Louisiana Oyster Task Force and the FDA about the closure.
