LAFOURCHE PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Agents are investigating an incident on the water that resulted in the death of a 5-year-old boy from Houma. The incident occurred Saturday around 11:40 p.m. on the Intracoastal Waterway near Bourg in Lafourche Parish. The boy has been identified as Ethan Hancock.
A Wildlife and Fisheries spokesperson says that both Ethan and his father were frogging on their mudboat when they ran out of gas. As the father tried to paddle across the Intracoastal Waterway, he noticed two 297-foot barges approaching their boat from behind. According to the spokesperson, the father told investigators that he feared the barges would collide with his boat, so he and his son quickly exited their vessel.
The spokesperson says that Ethan was wearing a life jacket and he and his father became separated after entering the water. The father was able to swim away from the tugboat, but it sucked Ethan under. His body did not resurface until 7:30 a.m. at which time it was recovered by authorities.
Ethan Hancock's body was turned over to the Lafourche Parish Coroner's Office.
