MARRERO, LA (WVUE) - A 5-year-old boy was killed Tuesday in an accidental shooting in Marrero, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.
The incident happened just after 6:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of Fernando Court.
According to the Sheriff's Office, first responding officers located the body of a 5-year-old black male lying in a bedroom closet with a gunshot wound to the face. The victim, identified as Melvin Brady, was pronounced dead on the scene.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and his 9-year-old brother were playing in the closet when at some point, they found a handgun. As the older brother began handling the weapon, it discharged once, striking the younger child. The semi-automatic handgun was found lying next to the boy.
At the time of the incident, the two children were in the home alone. The boys' mother, identified as 29 year-old Generra Brown, was across the street from their home taking care of an elderly neighbor. Brown called 911 after receiving word from her son about the shooting.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Col. John Fortunato said Brown was booked on one count of child desertion.
