CHALMETTE, LA (WVUE) -

Fire crews are on scene of a large apartment complex fire in Chalmette. The fire broke out around 4 a.m. and the old Village Square Apartments.

The complex, located at the intersection of W. Judge Perez and De La Ronde Drive, is abandoned.

St. Bernard Fire Chief Tommy Stone says there has been efforts to tear it down for several years. He says the building is fully engulfed in flames.

There is no indication anyone was inside and it's still not clear how the fire started.
