NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Americans don't appear to get the message about the risks of being overweight.
According to new figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans weigh more now than they did 20 years ago. The average man has put on 15 pounds. The average woman has added 17 pounds.
Boys weigh about 13 pounds more than what they weighed in the late 1980's. Doctors note the average boy is slightly taller now compared to 20 years ago. While girls are generally no taller than girls were 20 years ago, they are seven pounds heavier.
Doctors say the findings show the U.S. population is gaining weight at a rapid pace, which doesn't speak well for the overall health of the nation.
