WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WVUE) - Welcome in to Juan's World where we are now officially six practices old here at Saints training camp and some things have stood out.
One. The defense 'looks' better. Even Sean Payton has seen better play with his own eyes. Some stand out performers on that side of the ball are also the youngest players on the team. Like, second-year corner back Delvin Breaux and Rookie Defensive Sheldon Rankins. Based on the small serving sizes, both look to be keepers for many years to come.
Two. This has been one of the most spirited camps since they arrived at the Greenbrier. And it has everything to do with how well the defense has played. One could argue that this has been their best camp thus far. It's like 'they're' seeing the same potential that we are.
Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen's already been quick to remind us that they're not seeing the light in the tunnel yet. I get that, but allow us to be excited over the possibility of this unit finally pulling its own weight once the regular season comes around. To borrow a line from Payton…this defense has been 'encouraging'.
Three. My colleague Deuce McAllister doesn't believe that rookie receiver Tommylee Jones will make the team. But, this guy, who's 5-feet seven, 168-pounds soaking wet, has been one of the best players in camp. He catches everything coming his way. And, he can flat out fly. If camp ended today, he'd be a difficult cut for me because someone else would grab him and all of a sudden Jones becomes the Saints newest Rob Ninkovich.
Four. I'm excited about CJ Spiller. He told us a few days ago that the Thriller is back and I believe him. The injuries that hampered him last season are a thing of the past. And he's looked the part of the dangerous weapon that the Saints 'thought' they had a season ago. If he can stay healthy, Spiller might help Saints fans forget about Reggie Bush and Darren Sproles.
Juan's World, Juan's World, Excellent!!
