BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) - The state health department announced four additional cases of Zika virus in Louisiana.
The patients traveled to regions in the Americas with ongoing Zika transmission and received medical care after returning to the state, where tests confirmed the viral infection.
There are 19 cases of travel-related Zika confirmed in Louisiana.
The virus is spread by mosquitos. Transmission is much more likely in parishes around Lake Pontchartrain than other areas of the state.
If the disease was discovered to be transmitted in the state, public health officials and local mosquito control agencies will be notified to help minimize the potential for spreading of the infection.
