(WVUE) - It's back to the books for thousands of children and teachers in the metro New Orleans area today.
Local authorities want to make sure children remain safe as they head back to school today.
Students in the following parishes head back to school today:
- St. Tammany Parish
- Terrebonne Parish
- Lafourche Parish
- St. John the Baptist Parish
- St. James Parish
- Some charter schools in Orleans Parish
The New Orleans Department of Public Works says it is in the process of re-activating school zone flashing beacons.
Drivers are warned that anyone caught speeding through a school zone should expect a ticket.
In St. Tammany parish, the sheriff's office says you can expect a "grace period" as drivers adjust to schools reopening.
The sheriff's office says extra deputies in school zones to remind drivers that kids are back in school.
