METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - Rescue crews were able to save the driver of a pickup truck that plunged into the water after an accident on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Monday morning.
The bridge has reopened in both directions after a damaged guardrail was repaired. Causeway officials advise motorists to expect delays on the southbound side of the bridge beginning at noon and last for an hour as crews work to retrieve the truck.
The collision, between two pickup trucks, one a Ford F-150, the other a Toyota Tundra, sent the Ford through the guardrail and into the water near mile marker 10.
A causeway police officer went into the water to rescue the driver of the Ford and was able to pull the driver to safety.
The driver was taken to a nearby hospital. There is no further information on the condition of the driver.
Salvage crews pulled the truck out of the lake around 12:30 p.m.
