ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

The Causeway Commission voted Wednesday to raise tolls on the bridge to pay for safety improvements.

The $2 round-trip cost for a toll-tag customer will rise to $3. Cash customers will see their $3 toll rise to $5.

As the Commission approved a resolution to seek a bond of up to $133 million, a majority of the crowd walked out in disgust, according to FOX 8 reporter Rob Krieger.

Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou said the improvements, which include higher railings on the southbound side, would be built off-site. Installation may require single-lane traffic during non-peak hours.

The group Concerned Citizens of St. Tammany, which opposes the toll increase, had asked that the vote be delayed so that a compromise could be worked on.

It's not yet clear when the hike will take effect.
