TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Highway 22 in Bedico is the scenic route for those trying to get from Ponchatoula to Madisonville.
But earlier today, water from the Tangipahoa River made the road was impassable.
Flood water eroded the ground underneath the asphalt, as state police have been warning about since flooding started.
Even if the road looks safe and the flood water may have receded, that doesn't necessarily mean the ground is stable.
A historic bridge, built in 1938, is now in need of repairs because the water has completely washed away a lot the embankment sand soil underneath the bridge.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is investigating whether the bridge needs to be completely replaced or if it can be salvaged.
Even though the river has crested, the flood situation is not over, many more streets are impassable
