NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Detectives released surveillance images of a man suspected in an attempted armed robbery at a Bywater grocery store.

The New Orleans Police Department said an employee at Jimmy's Grocery told investigators that a man walked into the Dauphine Street store early Friday morning and ordered food. While the worker was behind the counter, the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun, pointed it at the employee and demanded money.

The employee said he tried to grab the man's gun and was hit in the head in the process. The worker escaped and ran to a nearby bar, where he called for help.

Two customers tried to stop the suspect from leaving in a white, 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe. The gunman struggled with a customer before running away.

Detectives ask anyone who recognizes the man in the surveillance image to call police.
