NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Floods carry risks to psychological as well as physical health. When floods occur, children may witness anxiety and fear in usually confident parents and caregivers. Families may lose pets and cherished memorabilia. Individuals may develop chronic emotional and behavioral problems following exposure to pervasive stresses, such as the loss of community infrastructure, of home or employment, or of family or friends. Dr. Meredith Maxwell from Touro shares some mechanisms for coping with stress.

o Recurring dreams or nightmares about the floods

• Some useful suggestions for coping with the stress and anxiety stemming from the flood include:
o Limiting your exposure to graphic news stories about the flood or other disasters
o Getting back to your normal routine as soon as possible, this is especially important for children
o Exercising, eating well and resting
o Staying busy- physically and mentally
o Communicating with friends, family and supporters
o Keeping a sense of humor
o Expressing yourself through writing, poetry, drawing, etc.
