'Cajun Navy,' other volunteers stage rescue effort in Ascension Parish

Flood victims become resuers in Ascension

ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WVUE) - A huge volunteer effort in Ascension Parish is making a difference for flood victims trapped in their homes.

In Sorrento, Josh Ellender and his boat have come in from Houma to assist in the search and rescue effort. He and others have been out here for the past couple of days.

The flooding has caught a few people off guard, but most have gotten out of the area.

They say the problem is moving up toward the north as water from the navigation canal starts to pile up on Airline Highway. Everywhere you go you see 4-5 feet of water in people's homes and vehicles completely under water.

A group of private citizens that call themselves the Cajun Navy has been in Sorrento rescuing people for the past 24 hours. Most of them have a deputy on board. Some are responding to calls and others are just on the lookout for anyone who needs help.
