TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Tangipahoa Parish residents have a new problem to deal with as they try and rebuild their flooded homes.
An estimated 10,000 homes in the parish were damaged or destroyed in the flood. Dozens of residents in places like the Sterling Oaks subdivision near Hammond are in the process of ripping out flooded debris and trying to rebuild.
But they are dealing with looters and thieves taking property from the curb.
They say in many cases they are being denied reimbursement because items they are claiming as losses have been illegally removed before their insurance agent or FEMA representative can verify the loss.
Many residents are putting up signs warning people not to take the curbside property.
They urge looters to stay away.
