Head-on crash kills passenger in Houma

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Houma Police Department suspect alcohol may be a factor in a fatal crash early Sunday morning.

Houma police responded to a report of a head-on collision Sunday just after 2:30 a.m. The collision happened near the east exit of the Houma Intracoastal Tunnel.

The vehicles involved in the accident were a 2006 Toyota Tundra and a 1995 Ford Escort.

The driver of the Ford Escort is identified as 52-year-old Fred Hough, and 60-year-old passenger Irma Martinez. Both Hough and Martinez were transported to a nearby hospital. Martinez later died as a result of her injuries. Hough remains hospitalized with severe injuries.

The driver of the Toyota Tundra, Christopher Bergeron was uninjured. Bergeron was arrested for vehicular homicide, first-degree negligent injury, and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

Bergeron was later released pending further investigation. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the accident, police said.
