After Further Review: New Saints roster projection

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) -

As we approach the halfway point of the preseason, here is my latest roster projections for the Saints:

Quarterback (3)

Drew Brees

Luke McCown

Garrett Grayson

-No change here. Grayson is not the backup yet but has grown enough to stick around to be the number three signal caller.

Running Back (5)

Mark Ingram

C.J. Spiller

Marcus Murphy

Daniel Lasco

John Kuhn

-Sticking with the same running back group. Murphy may be in the doghouse, but he is still the team’s best option at returner. He’ll get a shot at redemption this week. He has to take advantage.

Austin Johnson has returned, but I’ll stick with Kuhn at fullback until Johnson wins his job back.

This group easily change by next week.

Wide Receiver (5)

Brandin Cooks

Willie Snead

Michael Thomas

Brandon Coleman

Tommy Lee Lewis

-Coleman hasn’t earned a roster spot. However, I can’t see the Saints keeping four wide receivers with three of them being under six feet. Lewis has emerged as the player, regardless of position, that has performed too well to let go. He’s earned his spot.

This is a group where the Saints could work the waiver wire to see what’s available.

Tight End (3)

Coby Fleener

Josh Hill

Michael Hoomanawanui

-No change here. This group has remained pretty steady.

Offensive Line (7)

Terron Armstead

Zach Strief

Andrus Peat

Max Unger

Tim Lelito

Senio Kelemete

Tony Hills

-Hills comes back on as Jack Allen exits after a couple of big penalties Saturday night. By keeping just seven, I’m leaving open the possibility that the Saints make a move to bring in another veteran either by trade or waiver wire.

Defensive End (5)

Cam Jordan

Obum Gwacham

Kasim Edebali

Davis Tull

Bobby Richardson

-No change here.

Defensive Tackle (5)

Sheldon Rankins

Nick Fairley

John Jenkins

Tyeler Davison

David Onyemata

I don’t think Rankins ends up on short term IR, but even with his absence, this group is still a strength. Onyemata seems to have picked things up.

Linebacker (6)

James Laurinaitis

Stephone Anthony

Daniel Ellerbe

Nate Stupar

Craig Robertson

Michael Mauti

-This is the best I’ve felt about a group of Saints linebackers in a very long time. Anthony is back and there’s a pretty clear line between the top six and the rest of the linebacker group.

Cornerback (6)

Delvin Breaux

P.J. Williams

Damian Swann

De’Vante Harris

Cortland Finnegan

Ken Crawley

-Lewis is now gone which means both undrafted rookies Harris and Crawley make their way onto the roster. This is another area where the Saints could be scanning other teams’ rosters.

Safety (5)

Jairus Byrd

Kenny Vaccaro

Roman Harper

Erik Harris

Vonn Bell

-Same safety group as last week. It’s deep with a good mix of athleticism of veteran leadership.

Specialists (3)

Justin Drescher

Thomas Morstead

Conner Barth

-It’s starting to feel like the momentum is shifting for Barth in the kicker battle.
