METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - As we approach the halfway point of the preseason, here is my latest roster projections for the Saints:
-No change here. Grayson is not the backup yet but has grown enough to stick around to be the number three signal caller.
Running Back (5)
-Sticking with the same running back group. Murphy may be in the doghouse, but he is still the team's best option at returner. He'll get a shot at redemption this week. He has to take advantage.
Austin Johnson has returned, but I'll stick with Kuhn at fullback until Johnson wins his job back.
This group easily change by next week.
Wide Receiver (5)
Tommy Lee Lewis
-Coleman hasn't earned a roster spot. However, I can't see the Saints keeping four wide receivers with three of them being under six feet. Lewis has emerged as the player, regardless of position, that has performed too well to let go. He's earned his spot.
This is a group where the Saints could work the waiver wire to see what's available.
Tight End (3)
-No change here. This group has remained pretty steady.
Offensive Line (7)
-Hills comes back on as Jack Allen exits after a couple of big penalties Saturday night. By keeping just seven, I'm leaving open the possibility that the Saints make a move to bring in another veteran either by trade or waiver wire.
Defensive End (5)
-No change here.
Defensive Tackle (5)
I don't think Rankins ends up on short term IR, but even with his absence, this group is still a strength. Onyemata seems to have picked things up.
-This is the best I've felt about a group of Saints linebackers in a very long time. Anthony is back and there's a pretty clear line between the top six and the rest of the linebacker group.
-Lewis is now gone which means both undrafted rookies Harris and Crawley make their way onto the roster. This is another area where the Saints could be scanning other teams' rosters.
-Same safety group as last week. It's deep with a good mix of athleticism of veteran leadership.
-It's starting to feel like the momentum is shifting for Barth in the kicker battle.
