Details emerge in fatal Houma head-on crash

HOUMA, LA (WVUE) - New details have emerged in the Sunday morning accident that killed a 60-year-old woman and injured the 52-year-old driver.

Keith Bergeron, 28, has been charged with one count of vehicular homicide, one count of first-degree negligent injury, reckless operation of a vehicle, and hit and run.

Houma police responded to the scene of a head-on collision Sunday just after 2:30 a.m. The accident occurred near the east exit of the Houma Intracoastal Tunnel.

The vehicles involved in the accident were a 2006 Toyota Tundra, driven by Bergeron, and a 1995 Ford Escort.

The driver of the Ford Escort Fred Hough, 52, suffered severe injuries. A passenger in the Escort, Irma Martinez, 60, died as a result of her injuries.

As the investigation continued, police pieced together the path they believe led Bergeron to the fatal accident.

Police say Bergeron first hit a business with his care in the 600 block of Grand Caillou Road,

causing minor damage to the building.

Bergeron fled that accident scene and drove through a residential neighborhood, ending up on East Tunnel Blvd driving against traffic.

As he approached the 1400 block of East Tunnel Boulevard, still traveling against traffic, he struck the vehicle operated by Fred Hough head on, severely injuring Hough and killing Martinez.

Blood tests showed Bergeron had a blood alcohol level of .147.

Bergeron remains in the Terrebonne Parish jail.
