JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputies are investigating a traffic accident on the West Bank that left a man dead. The incident occurred Friday around 9:30 p.m. near the 1200 block of St. Ann Street in Marrero. The victim has been identified as 57-year-old Arthur Howard of New Orleans.
Police say that first responders arrived on scene to find a car near the water's edge in the Mayonne Canal. They also found the driver, identified as 66-year-old Willie Henry of New Orleans, and Howard, who was in the front passenger seat of the vehicle. Howard was pronounced dead on the scene. Henry was transported to University Medical Center to receive treatment for minor injuries that he suffered as a result of the crash.
Investigators determined that Henry drove the car towards the dead end on St. Ann Street and traveled a short distance along the banks of the Mayonne Canal, before sliding down the embankment and resting near the water. As an investigator interviewed Henry at the hospital, he detected an odor from an alcoholic beverage emitting from Henry's body and breath. Henry admitted to the detective that prior to the accident, he did consume alcohol.
After he was released from the hospital, Henry was brought to the Jefferson Parish jail where he was booked with DWI and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
