SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - The Slidell Police Department says they arrested a man claiming to be a "Sovereign Citizen" Thursday after they say he attempted to reach for a gun during a traffic stop.
According to Slidell Police, two officers pulled over 54-year-old James Webb of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi after witnessing his green Ford Ranger violate several traffic laws.
Officers say that when Webb was asked for his driver's license, registration and insurance paperwork her refused several times and instead requested both of the officers' badge numbers.
According to the officers, Webb then wrote on a sheet of paper that he was a "free traveler" and that he was not required to provide any of the requested information because they had no legal authority over him.
Officers then asked Webb to exit his vehicle after they say the repeatedly reached towards a bag next to him in the passenger's seat. Police say at that point, Webb attempted to roll up his window but the two officers managed to keep the window down.
After a brief struggle, Webb was arrested.
During a search of Webb's vehicle, officers found a .40 caliber handgun inside the bag that Webb kept reaching for during the traffic stop.
Slidell Police Chief E.J. Howard says that he is proud of his officers work during the altercation.
"I do feel that the quick actions on the part of the officers may have prevented this incident from escalating into a more dangerous and tragic encounter," said Howard. "Our officers will enforce the laws and will do what is required to keep themselves and the citizens of our community safe."
