NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - More specially-trained NOPD officers will soon be on the street, better prepared to handle and de-escalate situations involving people with mental health issues.
Tuesday, the NOPD will graduate the fourth class of officers to go through Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training which started one year ago.
The department says it has met its commitment to train at least 20 percent of patrol officers by August of 2016 as part of the federal consent decree, and will continue to train more officers to provide the "best possible crisis response to the community."
The training includes lectures by mental health experts, visits to mental health facilities and scenario-based skills training.
The graduation will take place tomorrow (Tuesday) at the NOPD training academy on Lakeshore Drive.
