A LaPlace woman died and another woman was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 Friday afternoon, according to Louisiana State Police.

Troopers say Markesha Williams, 27, lost control of her 2009 Toyota Camry.

The car ran off the road and struck a message board sign on the passenger side.

Williams was transported to a hospital where she later died. Investigators say 30-year-old Rachelle Jackson, also of LaPlace, is in critical condition at University Medical Center.

State Police do not know if the women were wearing seat belts. Troopers say a toxicology test is pending an autopsy on the deceased driver.

Troopers believe excessive speed may have been a factor in the crash.
