JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - A burglary suspect was pronounced dead after being transported to jail.
According to police, deputies were responding to a burglary in progress in the 300 block of Pasadena Avenue in Metairie around 9:30 p.m., Friday. The deputies found the suspect on Norton Street, located a few blocks away from the scene of the burglary. A chase ensued and the suspect, identified as Garland Waites III of Metairie, was taken into custody in the 4200 block of Norton.
Waites was placed in the back of a police car, as deputies were preparing to transport him to jail. According to police, a short time later, Waites started experiencing difficulty breathing. After EMT's examined Waites and cleared him, he was put back in the backseat of the unit. Waites started having breathing difficulties again, several minutes later.
Deputies called for EMS again, but Waites refused to be examined. Police put Waites in the back of a Paddy Wagon to be transported to jail.
According to police, Waites was discovered unresponsive, shortly after arriving at the jail. Jefferson Parish Correctional Center medical personnel and Gretna Police Department EMS were called in to provide medical assistance to Waites, but he was pronounced dead.
Police say that the matter is being investigated as an unclassified death, pending the results of an autopsy.
