NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - New Orleans police on Sunday arrested Matthew Mann, 36, who they say tried to rob a woman and then pointed a gun at a police car at around 10:30 p.m.
Police began investigating after a woman walking in the 1400 block of Basin Street reported that a man walked up and tried to grab her purse. Police say the woman resisted, and the attacker produced a gun. When a passerby walked up to the commotion, the attacker fled the scene.
Two NOPD officers were patrolling the area searching for the suspect when they spotted someone matching his description. They say as one officer exited his police car, the suspect, the suspect, later identified as Mann, pointed a pistol at another police car that was stopped on Basin Street. The officer ordered Mann to drop the weapon, but Mann allegedly ran away from the scene. The officer chased him and and eventually found Mann hiding in some bushes at St. Louis and Crozat streets. The officer arrested Mann, who was still in possession of the loaded gun, police said.
The NOPD says the victim in the attempted purse snatching was able to positively identify Mann as the person who tried to rob her. Mann, of Lafayette, LA, was arrested for attempted armed robbery.
