NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The man accused of shooting two people to death during a carnival parade admits he's guilty.

John Hicks avoided a life sentence Sept. 12 by pleading guilty to two counts of manslaughter.

Hicks killed two people as floats rode along Saint Charles Avenue in 2015. Investigators say the gunfire started in the middle of a fight near Saint Charles Avenue and Erato Street.

A judge sentenced Hicks to 45 years in prison, following his guilty plea.
