NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A fatal accident closed Interstate 10 East in Bayou Sauvage, after an 18-wheeler lost control and crashed into a canal.
Authorities reopened two lanes of the roadway in the early afternoon. Two lanes of I-10 westbound are also currently closed.
The accident occurred on the eastbound side near the Michoud Boulevard exit on Wednesday around 8:30 a.m.
When police arrived, they found an 18-wheeler submerged in the canal.
NOPD Special Operations Division Dive Team pulled the driver from the cab. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Orleans Parish coroner's office will conduct an autopsy to determine an official cause of death and release the identity of the victim once family members have been notified.
Good Samaritans tried to save the driver by jumping into the water. But were unable to do so as the cab was already submerged.
The truck was pulled from the water about two-and-a-half hours after the accident.
