NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - One dog was killed and another dog, along with family members, made it out safely after a house in New Orleans east caught fire.
The fire broke out just after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 5600 block of Maple Ridge Drive in the Michoud neighborhood of New Orleans East.
Fifteen units, carrying 37 New Orleans firefighters, arrived at 8:42 a.m. and found heavy smoke and fire already through the roof of the two-story home.
A second alarm was called as firefighters learned that the residents were possibly trapped inside.
Shortly after crews arrived, the homeowners told firefighters they were safe and their kids were in school.
But they also said two dogs were still in the house.
One dog was found safe in the backyard, but the second dog died in the fire.
The house was equipped with working smoke alarms that did notify the residents when the fire broke out and helped them escape safely.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
