Police: SWAT standoff suspect arrested after being found swimming in Algiers canal

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

New Orleans police have arrested a man following a SWAT standoff in Algiers. The incident occurred Saturday afternoon in the 1900 block of Odeon Street. 

Police say that officers arrived on scene after responding to a call of an aggravated assault domestic. As the officers arrived, they heard gunfire and requested the SWAT team to set up a perimeter. 

The suspect was later seen near a gas station on General DeGaulle Drive. After spotting police, the man jumped in the nearby canal located in the median of General DeGaulle. Following a short standoff with police, the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Jabari Hester, was taken into custody. 

According to police, he will be booked with domestic aggravated assault. Additional charges are pending. The investigation into the incident continues.
