NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - After events like the shootings at Columbine and Sandy Hook, federal authorities want all school administrators to be prepared.
In New Orleans, the U. S. Attorney's office and Department of Homeland Security are teaming up for the initiative.
Just last week, Akili Elementary School in the Upper Ninth Ward was touched by violence after a bullet that hit a window.
The window remains covered by a blue tarp.
No one was injured in this shooting but counselors were on hand to speak to students, some of whom were traumatized by the incident.
School counselors will also be attending today's workshop to learn the best ways to help kids cope with a traumatic experience.
Local law enforcement and school administrators will also be present to learn how to best prevent emergencies at schools.
New Orleans schools will be joined by school representatives from across the state who will attend the crisis management meeting.
