NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Work will begin next month to improve Jefferson Parish's flood protection system.
The $10 million project will raise the lakefront levee from Metairie to Kenner as much as two feet. It involves piling clay on top of the levee. When the protect is complete, the levee will be approximately 17 feet high.
Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority workers say the project will reduce the risk of flooding. They also say it may lower flood insurance premiums in the area.
The project should be completed by the spring of 2017.
