METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) -

The Jefferson Parish Council passed legislation that will regulate ride-sharing services like Uber.

Uber representatives have said they are concerned with the ordinance council members have been discussing for months now as they feel it treats them like a taxi company, when they are not.

The new rules are designed to put taxis and companies like Uber and Lyft on a level playing field.

Uber says they can then put drivers on the street as long as they have passed a background check, have insurance, a Louisiana license and registration as well as up-to-date brake tags and vehicle inspections. Parish council members got a lot of input on regulations because they want to make sure this is all done the right way.

“What we've found is that across the nation there are a lot of different ways to get at this, a lot of different ways to put safeguards in place, and that's where we think the business community will be helpful in helping us sort through what are the best options for our community,” Councilwoman Jennifer Van Vranken said.

The two-year-old issue appears to have been resolved with Wednesday's vote.
