METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - A highly anticipated grocery store chain opens in Metairie this morning.
The store is not the only one expecting big business so too are neighboring grocery stores.
Trader Joe's has a cult like following that is expected to bring lots of shoppers to Veterans Memorial Boulevard, but we found other smaller stores, are taking note, and stepping up their game.
The new store will open its doors at 8 a.m.
Jefferson Parish leaders say they worked hard to bring the popular chain to Metairie to get more people to spend their money in the parish.
Jefferson Parish Councilwoman Cynthia Lee-Sheng believes having a big name attraction will help draw others to the parish.
She's also noted that smaller, locally owned grocery stores like Rouse's, Dorignac's and Breaux Mart are making improvements to their stores to keep up with the new guy in town.
"Anybody coming to Veterans Boulevard maybe Trader Joe's brings them there and they may not have come in they stop at other stores to do other shopping," Lee said. "So I think a lot of businesses are going to benefit from trader joe's in the market."
Another thing parish leaders are expecting is a lot of traffic around the new store.
Anyone planning on heading to Veterans near Causeway should plan accordingly.
