Prankster cited in St. James clown incident

ST. JAMES PARISH, LA (WVUE) - St. James Parish deputies cited a 19-year-old man after he and another person allegedly walked into a grocery store wearing clown masks.

Sheriff Willy Martin said at this time, his office is not naming the individual cited for walking into the Matherne's Supermarket around 5:45 p.m. on Monday. Deputies are still looking for the other person involved.

Investigators said the two people wearing the masks did not act aggressively and left the store after the manager demanded they do so.

"This turned out to be nothing more than a prank," Martin said. "They had no other motive other than to just see who they could scare."

Martin also said there is no further concern about the incident or any other public safety issue concerning people wearing clown masks.

The 19-year-old was issued a summons for entering a public location with a mask.

Several sightings around the country have occurred involving people wearing clown costumes in public.
