NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The New Orleans Police Department says that a murder suspect is in custody after a nearly four-hour standoff Saturday morning.
Second District officers were dispatched to a home in the 700 block of Lyons Street just after 12:15 a.m. for a wellness check. The officers say when they arrived at the home, they noticed a foul odor coming from the home. When they knocked on the door, they received no response.
Later, a former resident arrived at the scene and unlocked the door. When the former resident entered the home, they found an occupant, 58-year-old Richard Donovan, armed with a handgun and barricaded inside of the rear bedroom.
The former resident then exited the home and informed the police of the situation who then notified the NOPD Special Operations Division.
During a check of the residence, the body of an unresponsive male was discovered in another room. The victim had a gunshot wound to the head. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The Special Operations Division then enacted a SWAT roll at 4:30 a.m. and a perimeter was established in the area.
Police say Donovan surrendered to police without incident just after 8 a.m. He was arrested and transported for questioning by homicide detectives.
According to police, Donovan was charged with second-degree murder.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
