(WVUE) - A Destrehan man was sentenced to 48 months in prison Wednesday after he was convicted in a $50 million Medicare fraud scheme.
Christopher White, 50, will also have to pay $2,272,241.96 in restitution.
White was an accountant for several health care companies and conducted the scheme over the course of at least 10 years, according to the plea agreement.
Prosecutors say White would coordinate payment to people who would collect Medicare numbers from elderly and disabled patients in the New Orleans area, which resulted in $50.7 million in payments to the healthcare companies between 2007 and 2014, the vast majority of which were fraudulent.
The investigation was a collaboration between the FBI, Health & Human Services, and the Louisiana Attorney General's Office.
