KENNER, LA (WVUE) - Flights across the country heading to Florida and the areas in the potential path of Hurricane Matthew are expected to be canceled throughout the weekend.
Some flights to Miami and Ft. Lauderdale are taking off early this morning, but that is not the case for flights later today.
American Airlines and Jet Blue flights to both cities are canceled this afternoon.
More trips are expected to be nixed as the storm approaches the east coast.
Currently making its way through the Bahamas, Matthew is intensifying and could hit Florida by tonight, but commuters are being asked to anticipate canceled flights to that area ahead of time.
Flights to cities a little further north could be affected. One family was hoping to make it to Savannah, Ga. for a birthday before the storm hits that area.
"They'll call me once they land, and we'll stay in touch from then," said Damien Garrett. "I just hope for a good flight going there and coming back."
Flights aren't the only mode of transportation in the cancellation cross hairs. Amtrak has also canceled trips in and around the South. Routes from New York and Washington to Florida are being scrapped ahead of Matthew's landfall.
