Marrero man killed in Thursday afternoon traffic accident

MARRERO, LA (WVUE) - A Marrero man on a motorcycle was killed Thursday after he collided with a pickup truck, according to initial reports from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department.

Just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputies responded to a traffic accident in the 7400 block of 4th Street in Marrero.

Witnesses told police, a man driving a 2014 Suzuki GSX motorcycle, heading eastbound on 4th street attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him. When he pulled out to pass he struck a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado head-on in the westbound lane.

Gabriel Collier, 36, of the 7300 block of Runnymede Drive in Marrero, was thrown from the motorcycle. Collier was taken to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The truck driver, Barry Blanchard of Marrero, told investigators the motorcycle suddenly appeared in his lane just before the collision.

Blanchard submitted to a breath test which revealed no presence of alcohol.

The initial investigation shows that Collier was improperly passing another vehicle, resulting in the head-on collision.

The investigation is ongoing.
