NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - An investigation continues into an accident where a pedestrian was hit while crossing Loyola Avenue near the Hyatt hotel. She died later Thursday afternoon in the hospital.

Just after 6 a.m., NOPD responded to a call of a pedestrian struck in the 600 block of Loyola.  Officers found a 58-year-old woman suffering from injuries and an SUV with damage to the front driver's side hood and grill.

Investigators say the woman stepped into the westbound lanes of Loyola Avenue traffic and was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban.

The Suburban was traveling westbound on Loyola in the left lane/streetcar tracks when the woman stepped out from between landscaping on the neutral ground and into traffic.

The woman was taken to University Medical Center and into surgery.

The driver of the vehicle, a woman, was transported to the DWI Office and tested but showed no signs of impairment.
