NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

Drew Brees delivered a memorable performance throwing for 465 yards, and four touchdowns against the Panthers. But kicker Wil Lutz was the hero in the end. His 52-yard field goal in the final seconds of the game, gave the Saints (2-3) a 41-38 victory.

With the win, the Saints now trail the Falcons (4-1), by two games in the NFC South. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 1-5.

The element of surprise gave the Saints an early lead in this NFC South contest. On 4th-and-1, tight end Coby Fleener scored on a jet sweep for a two-yard touchdown. It was Fleener's first rushing touchdown of his career, and gave the Black and Gold a 7-0 advantage. The drive consisted of 12 plays, for 75 yards in total.

No surprise on the second touchdown for the Saints, Drew Brees with a perfect deep ball connection to Brandin Cooks. Cooks' touchdown covered 87 yards, giving the Saints a 14-0 lead.

Brees continued his success through the air in the second quarter, linking up with Michael Thomas for a 9-yard touchdown. The Ohio State alum's touchdown put the Saints up 21-0.

Right before half the Panthers finally get into the end zone, courtesy of a Cam Newton to Devin Funchess 17-yard touchdown.

The Panthers cut the lead to 24-17 in the third, but the Saints answered right back with a Fleener 50-yard touchdown reception. Fleener's second score of the day gave the Saints back a two touchdown lead.

Panthers answered with two touchdown scores, but a Graham Gano missed an extra point made the score 31-30 Saints.

Saints quickly responded with a Josh Hill 8-yard touchdown reception. During the drive, Brees went over 400 yards passing. He now owns the most 400-yard passing games in NFL history.

Panthers knotted the score on their very next drive. A Newton QB keeper 2-yard touchdown, and a two-point conversion to Funchess pushed the score to 38-38.
