Police: Grandmother leaves child on busy roadway

HARAHAN, LA (WVUE) -

Police arrested a grandmother who is accused of leaving her grandson on a busy street in Harahan.

Officers responded to the 1100 block of Dickory Ave. on Sunday at 4 p.m. after receive a call that the child was near the median in a construction site.

A stranger stopped and helped the boy because he was afraid to cross the highway due to traffic, police said. The stranger took the child to the Harahan Fire Department for safety.

The boy said he dropped a toy out of his grandmother’s vehicle and the woman, Evelyn Knight, stopped her car. He got out of the vehicle and the grandmother drove away because he took too long, police said.

Officers said they asked Knight how she expected the boy to get back home and she said, “I don’t know.”

Knight was charged with child desertion and booked into jail.
