KENNER, LA (WVUE) -

Those traveling near Armstrong International Airport today might see smoke and fire coming from the area.

Don’t be alarmed. It’s part of an emergency exercise taking place at the airport today.

The exercise is a simulation of a full on emergency event to provide readiness training for police, fire and EMS crews.

It’s a requirement by the Federal Aviation Administration for airports around the country.

The exercise is designed to prepare all first responders for any kind of active emergency they may encounter at the airport.

Readiness is an increasingly important security concern given the increased use of the airport. Last year a record 10 million passengers came through Armstrong International.

The training will take place between 9 a.m. and noon.
