TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are investigating a three-vehicle accident that left one man dead and another injured. The incident occurred Wednesday just before noon on Highway 1065 near the intersection of Sims Lane in Tickfaw.
According to a Louisiana State Police spokesperson, Hammond Police officers were attempting to pull over a vehicle, driven by 21-year-old Darious Rashaad Ashton of Tickfaw. Ashton refused to stop and continued driving north on Highway 1065. Ashton then turned onto Sims Lane then turned around heading back towards Hwy 1065. As he drove back onto Hwy 1065, he failed to stop at a stop sign and was hit by another car, driven by 20-year-old Trey Thomas of Bogalusa. Afterwards, Ashton's vehicle was hit by a dump truck, driven by 36-year-old Daniel Funderburk of Independence.
Police say that Ashton was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. He was brought to North Oaks Medical Center in critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Ashton was pronounced dead.
Thomas, who police say was wearing his seat belt, was also brought to the hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries. Funderburk was not injured in the crash.
Blood samples were collected and will be analyzed at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
