COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) -

St. Tammany Fire District 2 firefighters and hazmat crews have responded to a chemical spill in Covington that closed an interstate on-ramp.

The spill happened Wednesday around 2:15 p.m. on the east on-ramp connecting Highway 21 and Interstate 12.

According to a St. Tammany Fire Department spokesperson, a tote carrying asphalt sealant fell off of a truck, spilling the substance on the on-ramp.

The spokesperson adds that the chemical does not pose any threat to the public. Hazmat crews began cleaning up the substance Wednesday evening.

The on-ramp remains closed to traffic.
