KENNER, LA (WVUE) - It will now be much easier for New Orleanians to pop over the pond.
British Airways will begin nonstop service between New Orleans and London.
The flights will begin March 27, 2017.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu called it "another game-changer for New Orleans."
Landrieu and other state and regional leaders were at the airport for this big announcement.
The flight from New Orleans to London is approximately eight hours. There will be four flights a week.
Officials say the average price for a round-trip fare is currently around $974 for economy class. A quick check of the British Airways website showed business class fares between New Orleans and London running approximately $2,300.
The new service will depart from London Heathrow at 3:40 p.m. GMT and arrive at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport at 7:40 p.m. CT The departure will be at 9:10 p.m. CT from New Orleans arriving at London Heathrow Terminal 5 at noon GMT the following day.
British Airways will be operating a Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner. Each of the 214 seats has a widescreen television, an entertainment system capable of connecting with personal device, and an in-seat chat system for talking to family or friends on the flight.
The aircraft is divided into four cabins with 154 seats in World Traveler (economy), 25 seats in World Traveler Plus (premium economy), and 35 seats in Club World (business).
Passengers can enjoy free meals, beverages, and a free checked bag.
Construction is underway on a new $800 million terminal that will allow the airport to service more travelers.
Michael Hecht, President and CEO of Greater New Orleans, Inc. said the construction of the new terminal and the additional flights will create over 1,000 new jobs.
The goal is for the new terminal to be built in time for the city's tricentennial celebrations in 2018.
