COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) - Opening statements begin today in the trial of a man accused of murdering his father and two-year-old half-sister.
Jacob Middleton, Jr. faces charges in the killings that happened two-and-a-half years ago.
Middleton, now 20, was 17 when his father Jacob Middleton, Sr. and his half-sister, Makayla were killed in the Abita Nursery subdivision.
Both victims were shot in the head in January 2014.
Middleton was charged with their murders. Prosecutors, however, are not seeking the death penalty.
His family has said they hope not to lose another relative having already lost Jacob Middleton, Sr. and young Makayla.
If convicted, Jacob Middleton, Jr. could face life in prison.
The presiding judge, Bruce Bennett from Livingston, has indicated he'd like the trial completed by Election Day.
