LASALLE PARISH, LA (WVUE) - State Fire Marshal investigators charge a mother in the death of a 6-year-old girl after a fire in Jena on the morning of Oct. 26.
Wendy Leian Blasingame, 29, was booked into the LaSalle Parish Jail on one count of negligent homicide after firefighters found her child's body in a burning trailer.
Investigators say they began investigating after fire crews responded to a camper trailer fire on Segrest Road just after 4 a.m. Wednesday. Firefighters found the body of Ayla Breeland within the burned remnants of the camper, which was completely destroyed by the fire.
Investigators say Blasingame was not at the trailer and did not return until hours after the fire was extinguished. They say when she did return, investigators believed she was intoxicated. It is unclear how long the child had been left unattended.
Investigators say the fire started in the trailer near a mattress on the floor. They say there were multiple illegally-energized electrical wires and a space heater near the mattress where the child slept.
Ayla Breeland's body was released to the LaSalle Parish Coroner where an autopsy was performed. The results of the autopsy are still pending.
