JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Jefferson Parish firefighters discovered the bodies of three individuals at a structure fire in Old Jefferson.
First responders were called to the 4100 block of River Road Monday afternoon to battle the one-alarm blaze.
As firefighters approached the structure, they found the body of one individual outside the building and another in the doorway, both appeared to have gunshot wounds.
"They immediately exited the structure once they recognized gunshot wounds and one of the firefighters says he saw someone in the house," Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said.
Firefighters retreated until the sheriff's office could ensure the scene was safe.
"Once the fire progressed to a point that we realized if there was another individual inside, it was no longer a danger to the officers or to the firefighters," Normand said. "The fire chief and myself made the decision that we were going to go ahead and try to extinguish the fire at that time with officers giving cover and they continued to try to put this fire out."
The Jefferson Parish Coroner later confirmed that the body of a third individual was located in an upstairs room inside the structure.
The body was badly burned to the point where the coroner cannot determine the individual's identity at this time.
Their cause of death and the cause of the fire are still under investigation.
There have been no reports of injuries to firefighters.
