ALGIERS, LA (WVUE) - A pregnant woman was shot to death in Algiers Wednesday night and run over by a car, according to initial police reports.
A woman who said she was the grandmother of the victim told our partners at NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune said the victim was nine months pregnant.
At around 8:45 p.m., officers responded to a call of gunshots near Sullen Place and General Meyer Avenue in Algiers.
When they arrived, they found an unresponsive female victim laying on Sullen near the sidewalk.
According to police, witnesses heard the victim arguing with a man inside a car, then four to five shots were fired, before the victim was seen running from the vehicle.
The man in the car ran over the victim, backed up and ran over her again.
Algiers resident Keith Robert said he heard the gunshots.
"Just a very sad thing. It's a very quiet neighborhood and I'm a little more vigilant now about where I want to go at night," Robert said
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have recovered the car involved in the incident. But at this point,investigators are not sure whether the victim was hit by the driver of the car before or after she was shot.
The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will release the victim's identity and the official cause of death and the term of the unborn child.
Charges will be determined at that point.
